Fantasy

In the realms of Fantasy my interests range from cozy/light to epic in scope. I love richly imagined worlds, fully developed magic systems, and complex character dynamics. A few specific interests:

  • Feel good fantasy in the vein of THE GOBLIN EMPEROR by Katherine Addison and THE HANDS OF THE EMPEROR by Victoria Goddard; genuinely kind characters and hopeful worlds where characters succeed in bettering society

  • Clever/Smart protagonists doing even cleverer things

  • Morally ambiguous characters (heroes and villains alike)

  • Political fantasy/courtly intrigue

  • Historical fantasy or fantasy inspired by history

  • LitRPG

Books I Love:

Science fiction

I’d love anything sci-fi whether it's grounded, space opera, futurism (solarpunk, afrofuturism, arabfuturism, etc.). I’d also love to see sci-fi horror with elements of the New Weird or horror that embodies the cosmic strangeness of space. Themes that I find particularly engaging:

memory, empire, revolution, cultural identity and transformation, language as a means of colonization, climate, and rebellion/resistance

Books I Wish I rep'D:

BookClub / upmarket fiction

Propulsive book club and upmarket fiction. I’d love to see anything that fuses genres to elevate broader narrative themes and turn tropes on their heads. Sophisticated, socially conscious thrillers/suspense, literary fiction, historical fiction, and speculative fiction.

  • Horror (horror romance, socially conscious horror, historical horror, haunted-by grief-horror, gothic horror)

  • Near future dystopian and climate change fiction

  • Spies, Hackers, Assassins, Heists with a subversive, genre-bending twist

  • Indigenous stories and perspectives

  • Family dramedy and stories that explore the many definitions of family

  • Historical fiction settings outside the United States and Western Europe

Books I Wish I rep'D:

Young adult

In the Young Adult space, I am looking for high concepts and strong voices with a compelling emotional core in fantasy (either contemporary fantasy or secondary world), grounded sci-fi, mystery/thriller, and horror. There is a lot of crossover in my adult wishlist for my Young Adult list:

Specifics:

  • A BIPOC-led DERRY GIRLS set in the south

  • Any horror story that is the book version of THE SOCIETY or FROM

  • Angsty romance

  • Talented teens thrown in a pressure cooker scenario

Books I Love: Legendborn by Tracy Deonn, A Study in Drowning by Ava Reid, Don’t Let the Forest In by C.G. Drews, The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé

Books I Wish I rep'D:

Children's: Middle grade

Books I wish I rep'd:

I’m drawn to anything from fantasy to realistic contemporary where there’s a perfect blend of whimsy, adventure, and heartfelt moments. But especially:

  • A project that embodies the Y2K Princess-core vibe of Ella Enchanted and Princess Academy

  • Magic! Magical Creatures! Adventure!

  • Kids in Space or any kid friendly Sci-fi

What I’m not a good fit for:

religious fiction, historical fiction of WWI and II, romcoms
